ABRIDGED - PRIMAL - CALL FOR SUBS
The beautiful Abridged magazine wants your work, poetry and/or art:
Abridged 0 - 29: Primal
Submission Call
What
first was humanity, in its primal condition, still smouldering with
instinct and fear? We shift about in mind-forged manacles, the cold and viscous
layer of the urban which closes us in with crusting edges. We are
numbed and
enveloped in the thick residue of industry and development. Lines of
buildings, artificial languages and artificial lives, leave us
unfeeling in unchallenged survival and a lost human heritage.
And
we, low to the ground and overwhelmed in the sensurround, were marked
with earth and the stench of other bodies. We were flooding inside,
unlived and burning. All of our skin, naked to the air and to the
movements of gravel under our pulsing palms and the balls of our feet; a
charged weather encloses bare flesh, flailing bodies lit by a deep sun.
We are locked and tangled in cyclical smoke movements around the
flames and we are howling.
Abridged
seeks poetry or art for its 0 – 29: Primal issue exploring the roots of
love, hate, fear, the animal part of us we continually wage war with.
Up to three poems may be submitted. Artwork can be up to A4 size and
should be 300dpi or above. Entries can (preferably) be emailed to us at abridged@ymail.com or
can be posted to: Abridged c/o Verbal Arts Centre, Stable Lane and Mall
Wall, Bishop Street Within, Derry BT48 6PU. Deadline for submissions is
8th March 2013. www.abridgedonline.com

THE STINGING FLY - WINTER 2012
The new Stinging Fly dropped welcomingly (how's that for a horrible, made-up adverb?!) through my letterbox this morning. I am dying to snuggle up with it for a read.
They have changed their subs guides for 2013: they will accept submissions in February, June and October. They will effectively, from now on, be working two issues in advance. So, submissions received in February 2013 will be considered for the October issue (Winter 2013-14); June 2013 submissions will be read for the Spring 2014 issue; October 2013 submissions will be read for the Summer 2014 issue.
The postal address for submissions is: The Stinging Fly, PO Box 6016, Dublin 1, Ireland. They do not accept e-mail submissions. More here.

Abridged 0 – 21 - Call for poetry & art subs
Abridged is a beautifully produced magazine out of Derry. They are looking for poems and art on the theme of Magnolia. Yes, Magnolia - the queen of paint colours. Closing date 21st May.
See below for their call for subs:
"In the world of colour charts and iconic English sheepdogs, Magnolia represents the fence-sitting hue that neither offends or accosts the senses. Adorning the walls of TurnKey packaged homes of first-time buyers or haunting the corners of final destination rest homes of howls and despair, Magnolia stalks us from the cradle to the grave. It is the bastard offspring of white: it is the disgraced sibling of beige. It is nothingness yet it is everywhere. It is Abridged 0 – 21.
Abridged, the poetry/art magazine is looking for submissions for its Magnolia issue. A maximum of 3 poems may be submitted of any length. Art can be up to A4 size and can be in any media. It should be at least 300 dpi. Submissions can be emailed to abridged@ymail.com or posted to: Abridged c/o The Verbal Arts Centre, Stable Lane and Mall Wall, Bishop Street Within, Derry BT48 6PU. Closing date for submission is May 21st."

WRITE FOR SUCCOUR - TOMORROW ONLY
I love this challenge from Succour and I hope to try it. Eek! I'm breaking out in a sweat just thinking about the PRESSURE!
DETAILS:
Please send your work to: succourdublin@gmail.com
DETAILS:
For the next issue of Succour, we would like to invite submissions which pertain not to a theme, as has hitherto been the case, but which adhere to a pair of conditions.
Condition 1: All submissions should be written on Saturday February 6th, 2010.
Condition 2: What you write should not be an attempt to execute an idea – for a story, for a poem, etc – that has previously occurred to you. Rather, we would prefer you to write whatever happens to come into your head at that particular time.
Condition 2: What you write should not be an attempt to execute an idea – for a story, for a poem, etc – that has previously occurred to you. Rather, we would prefer you to write whatever happens to come into your head at that particular time.
The idea for this issue was inspired by 20 Lines a Day by Harry Mathews, in which the author sets out to follow a rule Stendhal once set himself, to write ‘Twenty lines a day, genius or not’. Mathews undertakes this project in an attempt to overcome ‘the anxiety of the blank page’; it becomes part of his writing practice, his way of starting off, getting in the zone, before going on to whatever his main writing project may be. We would like submissions to February 6th, 2010 to be written in the same spirit.
We will be accepting submissions to February 6th, 2010 from Saturday February 6th 2010 until Monday February 8th 2010 – thereby allowing a couple of days for typing up etc.
Maximum word count: 400

SHORT ON SUGAR

Here's a fun call for subs from the Vestal Review site. A 7 to 13 word bittersweet love story:
Maybe you've heard about the success of "Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs" anthology? (Amazon rank 532 as of 4/1/08, probably unheard of for an anthology).
Would you like to participate in a similar anthology, "Short on Sugar, High on Honey. Bittersweet Love Stories?" All stories are between seven words (lucky number) and thirteen (bad luck). Original stories only. No titles.
We already have a NYC agent for this project and would like to move ASAP.
Submit to SHORTONSUGAR at VESTALREVIEW dot NET as pasted text. No attachments. Include your physical and your e-mail addresses. Submit as many stories as you want, but each in a separate e-mail. Put "Short on Sugar" in the subject line. Please do not use any other subject lines or your submission will be deleted by the system.
We will only reply to accepted submissions.
