NEW BOOK & 'PERSON TO WATCH' in IRISH TIMES

Photograph by Alan Betson, The Irish Times

I’m starting the New Year on a literary high note. Before Christmas I was delighted to sign a contract with the inimitable and innovative UK publishers, Salt.

Salt are well known for their poetry titles and in the last few years they have become champions of the single author short story collection. My collection Nude, which features stories centred on the nude in visual art, as much as in various love lives, will be published by Salt in September 2009. Nude will be launched in mid-September at Cork city’s Frank O’Connor International Short Story Festival.

And today I am featured in the Irish Times Week-end Review as one of their People to Watch in 2009, along with politicians, an actress, a model, an IT innovator, sports stars, a comedienne and a chef, among others. See here.

Thanks guys! Blush, blush.
As an Irish person (and a shy person), I find the self promo bit of writing hard and uncomfortable. But, in order to get my book 'out there' and sold, it looks like this will be the year to try and learn how to do it, without all the cringing. Somehow...

Saw the piece this morning - wtg! I think it's great that short fiction in general seems to be getting a bit more praise / attention these days as well, so hopefully Nude will go down well! Mind you, you need to make your earlier books easier to get hold of ;)

Hi Sylvia, Happy New Year to you too, and wishing you lots of literary luck. I went to see 'Australia'; it starts quite silly but improves a lot, I thought. Have you seen it? Make you homesick? Nuala x

Girl WHose Afraid - If only it were up to me...they are basically sold out, and haven't been reprinted (yet). But, if you are truly interested, Dubray Books on Shop St in Galway (091 569 070) have copies of both my fiction collections on their shelves. I saw them with my own eyes a few days ago!

Thanks for that - don't say it so loudly though, everyone else will get in before me! Will give them a bell and see if they will post them up to Dubland for me.

Haven't seen it yet, Nuala, but am still here/there till end January. Interesting title to get through our censors ;)

You rock! I am thrilled to know ya, you famous woman! And yes, I echo the feelings about book promotion forcing us shy and private writers into the public eye, it's not easy, but it can be done, with much support and occasional retreating back into small and dark places with just our desk and writing materials. Whee, 2009 is going to be such a great year for you! Good incentive for me to come over in Sept for your launch :)

Girl - I'm sure they will post them. They are a good, proper book shop! Thanks for the support.

Sylvia - so you are enjoying summer heat. Lucky you! I am wrapped in about ten layers to ward off the chill.

Laurie - thank you & happy new year to you!

Tania - aw, thanks girl. It would be great to make the FOC one of our annual meeting up points, wouldn't it?
I hope my book can be half as successful as The White Road. You've done it proud.

Wow, that is brilliant news for you. I am sure that the promotion will really help with getting your work out there, well done.

Hi Aidan, thanks. Not sure how helpful the IT piece will be but it certainly can't hurt. I was delighted to be included. They were discussing the article on Newstalk and I was referred to as 'a lovely writer' by one panelist. Lovely woman, whoever she was. Lovely! (I don't know what she meant by that but I thought it was fun!)

G'wan the lovely grrrls!

Delighted to see you in the IT Nuala. Great to see you getting the well-deserved recognition and - more power to your elbow - the Salt deal. May all future years exceed those past!

Hi Debi, Welcome! Yes, Barbara is another blogger I've met in real-life. And I'll meet her again on Saturday as she is coming to the inaugural meeting of a peer group I've set up. She is travelling MILES to get here. All for the love of writing!
