MOTHER AMERICA ON THE READING LIFE

Mel Ulm over at The Reading Life blog has posted a review of Mother America as part of his ongoing focus on Irish short story writers. He zones in on several of the stories and says: "I not long ago read a number of short stories by George Moore, who I now regard as among the truly great short story writers of the world, and I saw much the same power and great understanding of people found in the stories in Mother America."

It's always interesting to see which stories people warm to and Mel seems to have really enjoyed one of the two linked historical stories 'My Name is William Clongallen' (which first appeared in Dedalus Press's Shine On anthology).

The (physical) book has been delayed a little at the printers but I should have a copy in my paw next week before I go to the short story festival in Croatia. Here's hoping :)

A lovely post on your writing from Mel Ulm, Nuala. Congratulations! I very much like the George Moore compliment. I can't wait to read 'Mother America.'

Fingers & toes crossed you have a copy before you head off on your travels :)

Thanks, girls.

Yes, I hope so, Kar. It would be nice to read from it at the festival. Baptise it in Croatia.

loved Mel's post & loving the idea of the Hughes tale.

Thanks Parrish. That story concentrates on Assia Wevill, the woman whom Hughes left Plath for.

Great review, Nuala. Congrats, the first of many, I am sure. Best of luck in Croatia, book in hand :)

I finally read Mel U’s review late last night (this working malarkey gets in the way of my life so much!) My Holy God I am salivating at the idea of sitting reading this book. I just can’t wait! What a marvellous review, the first of many for this collection I’m sure.

And I LOVE the idea of the collection being baptised in Croatia.

p.s. forgive my misspelling in my earlier comment :)

Kar - I really hope so. I don't want to be reading from MS pages in Croatia :(
