JUNO'S LITERARY WIN

I keep meaning to blog about this and I keep forgetting. I'm supposed to be writing an essay at the moment but ... let it suffice to say, I am not in the mood.

Anyway, my daughter Juno (aged 3) was highly commended in a recent competition run by Imaginosity, the Dublin Children's Museum, called 'What's the Story?' It is great to see creativity being actively encouraged in children - fair play to Imaginosity.

So I thought I'd post her picture/story. Needless to say she is three so she can't write. She dictated the story to me and I typed it up.

Juno is obsessed with mermaids, death and pink things, as you will see. (Are all the daughters of feminists obsessed with pink?!) Here is the text in case it is not readable on the picture:

'Once upon a time there was a mermaid. She had green hair and a green tail and pink lipstick. She found her prince lying on the beach. Then she swimmed into the sea and she met her friends again. She telled them she saved her prince. She ate teeny weeny little kind of fish that were red. And she ate some shark. And chicken. The mermaid fell off a rock and hurt her arm; she tried to get the cut off and couldn’t. Then she got dead. Then she got alive again and married the prince. And that’s all. The End.'

Juno!

This is fabulous! Love how uninhibited kids are. How the mermaid swimmed and telled and then got dead.

Thanks, Angela. Yes, she loves stories where people 'get dead' :)

I want to be that mermaid!

Michele, do you want her ability 'to come alive again' or the prince?!

Cheers, Mari - sorry we were only passing ships at Cúirt. It was just so hectic!

Caroline - it is great that Imaginosity is encouraging creativity in kids. Love it! I hope Juno keeps it up too. She certainly loves stories.

That's a brilliant story. Sounds a lot like my own little 3 year old. Loves mermaids and anything pink!

I'm partial to mermaids myself (though not the Disney kind.)
An American friend send has sent us some stunning books by Margot Datz and a Chilean fable about a mermaid with gorgeous illustrations.

Aren't children's stories wonderful!

(Though I've no idea why daughters of feminists go for pink - wish I did! Though my house would look quiet without my granddaughter's sparkles all over it.)

Thank you, Jo!

I must say I am not pink averse but Juno is pink crazy. It's kind of funny.

Ah thanks, Kar, from Juno. I think I will encourage her to write chick lit or crime, at least that way she might get rich ;)
