Absolutely, V. Without encouragement of some kind, it's easy for writers to wither.
I agree wholeheartedly, and your "plant" metaphor, WRW, seems very apt.
I think the generosity can come from other writers, publishers, agents and editors. It can also come from our nearest and dearest. And it should probably also come from oneself.
